They are different, similar and related.
They are not identical or opposite.

A being is usually interested (this can include animals) - a thing is never interested.

A being or person is interested in a thing or being or person.

I am interested in the language.
He is interested in football.
She is interested in his welfare.

The language is interesting to me.
Football is interesting to him.
His welfare is interesting to her.

It is like 'boring' and 'bored'.

-ing describes something - eg something you are reading or listening to or watching.
-ed describes how it makes you feel.

This lecture is boring.
I am bored.

This book is interesting
I am interested.

This horror film is frightening
I am frightened
