Hi friends,

I watch a TV show. it is about cooking competition. A man is making his cookies which must be covered with fondant and coated with royal icing. But his royal icing looks very bad, he cannot use it, so he changes his strategy to spay it instead. And he says this "Royal icing? No, I’m royally screwed."

Could you explain what does it mean? Is it ironical?

Thank you
QP

Not irony, it is just a play on the word 'royal'.

Screwed = in trouble, have a problem

royally is an intensifier, meaning very, completely.

So he has a very big problem.

The joke is the use of royally as an intensifier when the problem is his bad royal icing.

Quote:
Screwed may refer to: Fastened with a screw. Slang for having pressure or stress exerted as if having a screw driven in. Slang for fornication. Slang for in serious trouble.

It's a pun really. He is using two different meanings of 'royal'.

"Royal icing" is the icing you usually have on wedding-cakes and such. It is made from egg-whites beaten with powdered sugar and is very very hard (it's like glass). Normal icing is made from milk and sugar, and is much softer.

"Royally" is an adverb (intensifier) meaning "extremely", "impressively" or "totally".

"I'm royally screwed" means "I'm completely ruined! I failed."
