He wanted to eat prawn and took one from the plate.
"No, the prawn has shell. Let me rip off the shell first."I told him.

How do I say to take off the shell of prawn?

You could say, "Let me remove it from its shell", or "Let me take it out of its shell".

Bihunsedap -

I just don't think "rip" is the right word here.

If you had said "Let me take off the shell first." you would have been totally correct.

As it's a prawn I wouldn't agree with Foundit's idea to "take it out of its shell": it's not like a crayfish or sea anemone whose shell remain intact once the animal has been removed. One has to peel a prawn, like a shrimp or a yabby, so we take it's shell off it; we don't take the creature out of its shell.

Let me remove the shell, first.

Of course, if the person you are speaking to is not your child, then say "Be sure to remove the shell, first."
