People of Gibraltar Vote to Remain a British Dependency (1967)

A rocky peninsula on the southern tip of Spain, the Rock of Gibraltar was held by the Moors from 711 to 1462, annexed by Spain in 1501, and captured by the British in 1704. After more than 200 years as a British crown colony, the people of Gibraltar participated in a national referendum and rejected a proposal to transfer control of Gibraltar to Spain, choosing instead for it to remain a British territory. What were the results of a 2002 referendum proposing shared British-Spanish sovereignty? More...

"Annexed by Spain" is a queer formulation, suggesting that Moors (Arabs and Berbers) did not come to the Rock of Gibraltar and the rest of the Iberian peninsula as invaders and occupiers. Such "political correctness" is becoming irritating.

Yes, sometimes the Spanish authorities tried (and till try) to blockade and harrass them into giving up, but people never respond well to threats, {and you have to take into account what was happening to freedom and democracy in Spain in the 30s to 70s} so.....

... but post-Brexit, Spain will try to blockade Gibraltar into submission. It will make sense to join Spain, and the demographic has changed with recent Spanish immigration.
But after how they treated Catalonian autonomy recently, as well as the Basques... I don't think anybody who doesn't fit the Spanish idea of 'Spanish' will be keen to be under that level of aggressive centralised domination.

not all just pro-brit stuff though - Gibraltar is very proud of its own identity and history
