Use of apostrophe "s" Options

"Education is more than the teaching of the three R's."

This widely-used form has always bothered me. Is the apostrophe used correctly in this example?

No, it probably shouldn't be there. But it does make it look less like an electronics supplier.

I think that, personally, I would change it fully.
