There are a lot of people.
There are many people.

Which is the correct sentence?

Thanks.

Both are correct and common. "A lot" is more casual.

This isn't really a sentence, so it is not something you would often say.
It depends on what you want to say.

large number - a lot
Either it is a plural subject 'people':
There are a lot of people outside who want to come in, but we are already full.

Or it is the singular subject 'a lot':
There's a lot of people here.

large proportion - many
There are many people who believe in aliens. Surveys of people in the US show that 70% hold this view.

But you would not say 'there are many people' - that is not a sentence by itself.
