Technically there's nothing wrong with it:

Quote:
peep 1
n.
1. A short, soft, high-pitched sound or utterance, like that of a baby bird.
2. A slight sound or utterance: I don't want to hear a peep out of you.

If it can be called an idiom is a whole nother question.

It is not found in Google Books prior to the 20th century:

https://books.google.com/books?id=g2UrAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA695&dq=%22not+a+peep+out%22

Quote:
There is not a peep out of the member for Timaru. Is he in favour of the land development encouragement loan scheme and the increase in productivity from 700 000 ha of land?

It appears first in Cosmopolitan in 1921:

https://books.google.com/books?id=2AXnAAAAMAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=%22not+a+peep+out%22

And I couldn't find any British source. :(
