(1) The names of all winners are printed on the list.

(2) The names of all the winners are printed on the list.

The second sentence has the definite article for "winners". How does it change the meaning of the first sentence. Thanks a lot.

My thought is that "the" in the second example does nothing to change the meaning - in fact, I think it is unnecessary.

It is a matter of grammar rule.

"All winners" would mean everyone who has ever won anything at all. "All the winners" means the winners of the particular competition(s) being referred to.

Similarly:

All batsmen use bats. [= all batsmen at any time or place]
All the batsmen played well. [= all the batsmen in a particular team, match, club etc]

I agree. The word "the" in this case adds nothing and is not needed.
