I have just read the following indan brown book :
To Newlon, who had spent years in the shark-infested waters of the Hollywood music industry, Brown was a breath of fresh air. For one, he was a nice guy.
What is the meaning of the expression in bold in this context?

It means the Hollywood music industry is a dangerous place where people can take advantage of you in some way.

Right. Just as swimming in water with a lot of sharks can be deadly, Hollywood's movie and music industry is filled with people who can destroy careers if they wish. Think of Harvey Weinstein. He was a great white shark.

A great many people will think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. ~ William James ~

Besides being dangerous, the metaphor of shark-infested implies:

1 you can't see the danger, since they hunt from below - it looks like a normal meeting with a producer, but......

2 they prey on the weak. Sharks are attracted to blood - so if you are strong they are not such a threat, but if you are vulnerable and naive they will take advantage of you.

and

3 they gather around a potential target - sharks circling their victim before attacking - it implies that nearly everybody in the system is bad - nobody is trustworthy and on your side

All that from three words - pretty amazing, really!

Yes - Brown was 'a breath of fresh air' - something unusual; a nice guy.

It has a missing space. It is in the Dan Brown book.

The quotation is from "the Dan Brown book" - actually "Dan Brown - The Man Behind the Da Vinci Code: The Unauthorised Biography" by Lisa Rogak.

You can read the context here.

Shark infested waters are filled with man eaters, and they will consume a human. The Hollywood music industry is being compared to that; it is a place where a person can be eaten alive, by shark-like humans.
It is a metaphor, and symbolism. So if one succeeds in Hollywood; they have overcome challenges, and people who potentially want to destroy them.
That is what I get out of it.
