I had known two etymological relatives of incumbency: succumb and incumbent.

After reading the original post, I was curious about other words with the same Latin root (cubare "to lie down" ). What I've found is: incubation, cubicle, concubine.

I had thought that concubine was a Japanese word. I heard the word first time when I was a teenager. I watched a TV program about Japan and the word
was mentioned in the program. I predicted vaguely that it meant a woman who slept with someone, an emperor or samurai.
