Symptoms usually start in early childhood and vary from child to child, but the condition gets slowly worse over time, with the lungs and digestive system becoming increasingly damaged.

Please explain the grammatical form and function of "with" in "with the lungs...".
My guess: preposition but don't know its function in the context.

Which meaning of "with" is used here in the context?

Does the phrase function as an adverb?
Thanks.

You don't say what definitions 6 and 8 are . . .

In the Merriam-Webster's dictionary I found on-line, it is both definitions 7b and 9a.

with
7b —used as a function word to indicate an attendant fact or circumstance: stood there with his hat on
9a — used as a function word to indicate a close association in time: with the outbreak of war they went home; mellows with time

- the condition gets slowly worse over time
- the lungs and digestive system become increasingly damaged over the same time.

Wyrd bið ful aræd - bull!
