Hi, people. I have the text in my book:
I tried not to let it show, but I wasn't that excited about the Grand Canyon and a boat on some lake.
Can you explain to me why author uses "let" in this sentence? Can I say "I tried not to show it, but I wasn't that excited about the Grand Canyon and a boat on some lake" instead of it? Is meaning changing with my new sentence?
Thanks.

Yes your alternative would work just as well. "Let" in this context means "allow". The individual was being careful to conceal any facial expression or body language that might suggest his/her lack of enthusiasm about the Grand Canyon or the boat trip.
"Today I was a hero. I rescued some beer that was trapped in a bottle"
