The court has dismissed Li Shengwu’s application challenging an order that allowed the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to personally serve court papers on him out of jurisdiction, with costs.

This means that Shengwu – the grandson of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew – will have to pay for the costs incurred by the AGC to respond to his application. Shengwu’s lawyers, Abraham Vergis and Asiyah Arif from Providence Law Asia, told reporters yesterday.

What does 'out of jurisdiction' mean?

Thanks.

A court can have jurisdiction over defendants that are from an other foreign state, province, country,... This is called "Foreign Jurisdiction" or it is "out of their jurisdiction".

"Out of jurisdiction" -- you have no power there. If you break a law in Paris, then London (for example) will have no jurisdiction over your crime.

If a mother tells her child that he cannot have a cookie, the child has no jurisdiction over the decision.

Mainly used in legal proceedings. A judge has the powers to adjudicate certain/some under defined acts,(not all) law cases or cases pertaining to a particular area assigned to his court.

"jurisdiction
The right to apply the law, or the area in which someone has this right."

Otherwise, Area, commanded over.

I am a layman.
