I’m wondering about the usage of “How about?” and “What about?” for making suggestions.

As it turned out, some online materials claim that only “How about” can be used to make suggestions:
How about? for suggestions

while others say that both expressions can be used for this purpose.
Both How about? and What about? for suggestions

Which do you think is correct?

Well both are slang terms - it's difficult to make "rules" for this kind of informal English. But I too would find no difference, in making a suggestion, between the two.

I think they can be used interchangeably, there is a lot of overlap between the two, but I would usually use

"How about" when making a suggestion that I feel is best.

I would use "What about" when I am less set on the idea and more willing to listen to other suggestions.

I've always thought of them as one referring to "How (do you feel) about ..." and the other one - "What (do you think) about..."

In most situations there's no difference, but sometimes I tend to slightly prefer one to another.
I don't know if this interpratation is any good.
