What does "tapped off" mean?

I couldn't find it in any of the dictionaries?

Is "off" an adverb?

It means "connected to" or "supplied from."

No. Just as the prepositions "to" and "from" are used with "connect" & "supplied" respectively, "off" is always used with "tapped" in this kind of technical language. It's the prepositions which indicate that these are technical usages.

i.e in a normal usage - "She tapped on the window" - no preposition is used.

Thanks. How do we know when to add to the verb and generally what does it mean when added this way?
