Hello respected teachers,

He jabbed almost nervily at the brake pedal.

What would be the closest word/phrase to the underlined, please?

I am looking forward to your answers.

Impudent. He didn't have a thought of what might happen behind him.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It doesn't mean that to me, at all. Maybe there's an American slang meaning.

He jabbed anxiously at the brake.
He jabbed nervously at the brake.
He jabbed agitatedly at the brake.

nervy adjective
anxious, nervous, tense, agitated, wired (slang), restless, jittery (informal), on edge, excitable, jumpy, twitchy (informal), fidgety Sometimes dad was nice to us, but sometimes he was bad-tempered and nervy.

Collins Thesaurus of the English Language

Wyrd bið ful aræd - bull!

It does sound a wee bit out of place here, admittedly. The usual word used in this kind of situation would be "almost *nervously*".

However, I was surprised to learn that the word in AE means the exact *opposite* of its meaning in other parts of the world!

So it would depend if the writer was American or not. If so then he jabbed boldly/impudently at the brake.

If not, then he jabbed nervously/hesitantly at the brake.

It's a huge difference!!
