Quote:
‘Yes! When I can forget the rest. When I can’t forget the rest, I want to get under the table and die.’

‘Why under the table?’

‘Why?’ he laughed. ‘Hide, I suppose. Baby!’

The excerpt comes from here: https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/l/lawrence/dh/l41l/chapter14.html

Context: a lady (Connie) is asking a man (Mellors) if he's glad to have her, despite all the horrible experience he had had with other women in the past.

I know "baby" can be use as an exclamation of strong feeling, but it seems far too modern for a book written in the previous century. So what does it mean here?

Note: "the rest" here can be interpreted as "other women" or "other people," since Mellors also touched on how society will give them a lot of flack for their affair.

I agree - much too early for modern endearment "baby".

I should therefore accept it as meaning exactly what it says: - Who hides under the table when they don't want to get into trouble (apart from dogs!)? Babies or small children.

So he laughs and admits its very babyish of him if, even metaphorically, he himself hides under a table.

That does seem reasonable. Thank you for the suggestion.

VK - thanks for understanding that it WAS only a suggestion: - I meant to put a question mark after that final "table" but forgot. Anxious

Only a suggestion, perhaps, but I can't think of a better explanation.
