The cited usage is hardly indicative of the use of 'forswear' as defined. Alcohol use is not a belief. (I've assumed that 'grasping the bottle' refers to alcohol.)

- It's a verb that describes the act of rejection or renouncement with determination or upon an oath.
- It's an additional meaning regarded to perjuring at jury court or under a given swore.
- To make untrue declarations. Falsify, lie, prevaricate.

Alcohol use may not be a belief but alcohol is as it is truth itself. And he is talking of alcohol not its use.
