"Do you know that alkali is a basic, ionic salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chemical element? It is used, for example, to make batteries." Rhetorically asked Sandy Cheeks his friend SpongeBob SquarePants.
"Yeah, I didn't know that. Can it dissolve in water? If not, I want to use it for a new Mr Krabs kelp boat." Said SpongeBob.
"Our Bikini Bottom is safe, but I am not sure about water below the Golden Temple." Happily answered Sandy Cheeks basing her wisdom on experience.

One of those al- words of Arabic origin incorporated into the world's languages.

Quote:
From French alcali, ultimately from Arabic اَلْقِلْي‏ (al-qily, “alkali, ashes of the saltwort”), related to قَلَى‏ (qalā, “to roast in a pan, fry”).

But unrelated to 'lye' - as in lye soap, made from wood ash.
That is old English lēag, from Proto-Indo-European *leu(ə)- (“to wash”). -
