An Uber driver has been accused of reversing his car into an MRT engineer and punching the engineer in his face, when confronted.

The 26-year-old MRT engineer, Li Zijian who hails from China, had booked an Uber ride so he could travel to Redhill to buy some badminton equipment with his friends.

Would it be better if 'the engineer' were replaced by 'him'?

Thanks.

I think that would sound better.

You would also say 'punching him in the face'.
The parts of the body take the definite article after a preposition. Or at least it seems that way.

So

..punched his face
Or, better
..punched him in the face.

It is a pattern to use 'the' with a preposition
-I want to shake you by the hand
..the ball hit me on the arm
..I was stung on the ankle
