The teacher said that the world was round.

I know that it is correct to ask "Is the above sentence OK?" But I don't know why it is not correct to ask "Is the sentence fine?"

May I know the reason for it, please?

Thanks.

That is an interesting question!

Expressions such as "OK", "correct", "acceptable", "satisfactory" etc are purely descriptive. But "fine" is an 'emotive' expression - it has an implication of approval or encouragement, in response to what someone has said or written. It implies something like "yes, you are doing well!". It would therefore sound odd to use it in a question (or in a negative statement).

As Audiendus points out, we could say "That sentence is fine" or "That's a fine sentence," but we wouldn't ask if it was "fine". We might ask if it was "all right", "correct" or "acceptable", but not if it was "fine" or "excellent".

If a friend of mine asks me "How are you?"
can I reply "I'm fine" or should it be "I'm OK."?

You can use either, but it is better to be "fine" than merely "OK"!
