It seems an exaggeration, particularly to be used in a literary sense!

Exactly! It may have been used as a hyperbole but no dictionary has it as an established meaning.

And in the presented quote it is not used alone - it is moral putrefaction.

I see it more commonly used as a description of rotting matter?

I miust admit it got me confused at first: I thought it was IMPROVEMENT instead of corruption of moral attitudes like values etc. I daresay the definition is jambled up.

"Moral putrefaction" is a metaphor. The ground of the metaphor is rotting organic matter, particularly animal matter. The given synonyms deprivation, depravity, and degeneracy are synonyms of the metaphor, not of the basic meaning of the word putrefaction. "Corruption" is the closest synonym, because one of its alternative meanings is rot.

Perhaps an interesting choice for word of the day, even in hyperbole, given the political inferences for our current atmosphere. Without creating a wildly polarizing or hostile environment here, what do you all think?
