Here's one. Add your ethics questions resulting from Advancing Technology. Who decides the morality, ethics of a self-driving car? Do programmers decide who lives or dies in no-win choices? Or do we need some legal definitions? Article is from the Detroit Free Press. http://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/2017/11/21/self-driving-cars-ethics/804805001/ "Do the people you care about love you back?" Interesting questions. A bit of cogitation suggests that it will be a two step process. Programmers and engineers will do their thing, actively deciding what the vehicles' responses shall be in wherever foresight allows and failing to program responses to some unforeseen eventualities. Litigation will follow, lawsuits will be filed as soon as those unforeseen eventualities result in damage, injuries and fatalities. Legislation is also possible, but legislators usually tend to be clumsily responsive rather than perceptively anticipatory.

Thanks for the info, Orson. I too thought the author asked some interesting questions. As you say it is the unforeseen that will create the problems. And that is true about legislators being slow and clumsy. As for a self driving car, I know a couple of years ago when for the first time we used the self park feature it was a novelty to watch the steering wheel rotating quickly all by itself and then the car was parked in a tight spot. A lot easier than doing it oneself. This article in Reuters says part of the problem is cars that obey all traffic laws having to interact with less careful drivers. Maybe if we ever get to the point where all cars are self driven there would be fewer problems. https://www.reuters.com/article/autos-selfdriving-crashes/gms-self-driving-cars-involved-in-six-accidents-in-september-idUSL2N1MF1RO:: Canada is now working on assisted suicide ethics, and also what to do when family wants to keep a loved one alive when doctors say there is no hope. My answer to those is to decide each case on its merits. "Do the people you care about love you back?" Warren Buffett's measure of success

Excellent point! When all cars are self driven, individual cars can be programmed to respond to traffic conditions in a deterministic way, and can even communicate among themselves to eliminate accidents altogether. Sadly, it is unlikely we will ever get to having all self driven cars simply because of politics.

When you can't use electricity because of some accident or natural disaster,
primitive tools are very useful and necessary, gasoline vehicle included.
