I am going to make up a sentence below.

(1) If you find five identical shapes in the puzzle, you will win a prize.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Next, I am going to replace"identical" with "same".

(2) If you find five same shapes in the puzzle, you will win a prize.

Is it OK to use "same" instead of "identical"?

Thanks.

No. We can say "five shapes that are the same", but not "five same shapes".

And "Five of the same shapes" would be "five of the aforementioned shapes", which most likely would not identical.

Hi robjen.

To add to NKM's answer:
"Same" is not a typical adjective. It is used in a few specific ways, often rather like a determiner.

It cannot be used after a number - but 'identical' and 'similar' can be.
There can only be one 'same' thing. The same one is not identical, it is the thing itself.

I have six identical plates. (They are exact. You could not tell one from the others.)
I have four similar hats. (They are not identical. You can see the differences, but they're not very different.)
John and I use the same computer. (It is not an identical one or a similar one, it is the same computer - there is only one computer and we both use it.)

To say 'five same things' does not really make sense.
Some people use 'same' to mean 'identical', as NKM has done, but it cannot be applied to actual objects (for example 'puzzle pieces'). "Same" can only be applied to an attribute (like something's shape).
NKM's sentence actually means:
If you find five puzzle pieces which are the same shape, you will win a prize.
If you find five puzzle pieces which are identical in shape, you will win a prize.
If you find five identical shapes in the puzzle, you will win a prize.

robjen -

imagine that you pick up two stones. You take them home and you weigh them. Both weigh 500g. Both are grey. Are they the same? As far as their general characteristics, yes. They both have the same mass and colour.

But, are they identical? One may be round, one may be rectangular, one may be sharp and long.
