what Is the meaning of : what stands to me now

Here's the fragment : Why, when I was a nipper every morning of my life I had a cold bath, winter and summer. And that's what stands to me now.

I understand it as : 'and that's what stays with me now' (from those times)

Is that right?

Hello Sorin.

The fact that it is a book by James Joyce explains the 'unusual' English. He regularly invented his own phrases.

I think you are right - when something 'stands' it is, or continues to be, in some state so 'stays' is a good synonym.

He feels that having a cold bath is still the right thing to do.
