On July 11, 2017, the Sri Lankan Navy were on their routine patrol when they saw an elephant struggling to stay afloat in the water. Apparently, the large mammal was swept away almost 10 miles from the shore.

Thank you so much for posting this amazing rescue, I had seen it on our TV News, but this was more informative.

Poor elephant must has been so distressed, I can only imagine the difficulties of keeping that body weight afloat.

Congratulations to the SL Navy.

There's a joke in here somewhere about 'swimming trunks'... but I can't be bothered to put all the bits together. Anxious

There is a theory that some of the sightings of the Loch Ness monster may been a swimming elephant.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4779248.stm
Apparently a travelling circus that used to visit the Inverness area sometimes used to take them swimming in the Loch in the 1920s and 30s, if the story is to be belived. People seeing a trunk in the water would not know what on earth it was.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

Ursus M,

I don't know if you're aware of it - but elephants taking to the sea and being rescued is not a new thing in Sri Lanka. They just get overcome with the sight of so much water, I guess, and decide to swim to the other side!!

My earliest memory is of going to the pond near our house in the evenings to watch the mahouts wash - and play with - the elephants.
I love these wonderful creatures. (The elephants - not the mahouts!)

I have to fess up that I am addicted to the photos on Pinterest of baby elephants, they are so child like and naughty, I would love to give them a cuddle.
