What does "field" mean in this context?

Hull managed to settle and
stem the flow of Villa attack
and a rare attack of their
own almost saw Fraizer
Campbell get on the end of
Sam Clucas cross midway
through the first half but
Sam Johnstone was alert to
the danger. The Villa
goalkeeper then had to field a Kamil Grosicki shot from the edge of the box.

Here field means to catch or block the ball in play, it is used in sports like football, cricket and baseball.

In both cricket and baseball players in the outfield are known as fielders.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

Sarrriesfan is correct.

If you field the ball in a game of football, cricket or baseball, you stop it after it has been hit. In this case, Kamil took a shot at the goal. Since Johnstone was alert to the danger, he was able to stop the shot. In the given text, "to field" means "to stop".
