What does the phrase " death consistent " mean here?

He had been summoned by telephone to Hunterbury Hall; too late for anything to be done; Mary Gerrard had died a few minutes after his arrival; death consistent, in his opinion, with morphia poisoning in one of its less common forms.

The expression is actually 'Death consistent with morphia poisoning ...'.
The circumstances and symptoms of the death lead the doctor to the assumption that the victim has been poisoned.

Check the phrase 'consistent with'. The words 'in his opinion' may be somewhat confusing.

I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. (Anon)

A death [which was] consistent with morphine poisoning - the symptoms matched that diagnosis.

You can't exclude other causes. But the condition of the body does suggest that is a possible cause.

Punctuation is there for a reason. Put the comma-enclosed phrase aside for clarity. Like your appendix - they can be removed without damaging the sentence! Whistle
