Looking at the timestamps of dera's spam posts in S&T this night,
could it be possible to increase the posting interval limit for newbies?
Dera have posted again in less than 30 seconds.

(How do I recall there was a 60 seconds limit for all?)

JJ, I don't recall any limitation or restriction on posting intervals. Was there any? I myself remember posting in quick succession through different tabs. I have never faced any issue in TFD regarding this, which I can feel in other forums.

I however feel that there should be a restriction.

I recall having been made to wait a few seconds before I could post again. That was in games.

Talking about spammers, today I received a porn site spam on my messenger and I'm wondering if it is possible that this certain person got my e-mail address from here (it hadn't happened before on messenger until I registered here). I suppose e-mail addresses are for internal use only, but I'm asking because I haven't found an option to make my e-mail address either public or private, and I'd like to know if there's a way to make sure that these fine people won't easily see our e-mail addresses.

Back to the topic, yesterday I reported a person who posted 10 spams. I see it's happening quite frequently.
Regards!

Maximilian,
I know something about hacking because I work in computer and networks security,
but have no idea how to get your e-mail address legally without asking you in a PM.
Would not like to try hacking your profile here, or to run a simple scanner tool overnight to mine all the files in this web server for text strings looking like e-mail addresses. The admins could take that quite seriously ;-)
A true hacker/spammer, of course, would have no inhibition on doing so and no honour and reputation to lose.

I've been having the crazy idea that on some forums an admin may also be a double agent
Just kidding, I haven't had further spams after that one I mentioned.

Could it be possible to alter this forum system so that the spammer would get a notice message whenever someone marks his post as a spam?

Some spammers might stop when seeing their actions are noticed.

JJ, here I have a difference of opinion. Sending a notice message is of no use.

If the spammer is a bot, it does not matter at all. The notice messages will not be received at the other end.

If it is a manual advertiser, it will understand that its previous posts have been deteced and perhaps deleted. It will creat a new ID and will post with more precaution, may be with some text on the basis of which it may get a benefit of doubt.

I've been lucky that way a few times. It's cool to see it happen. It's definitely a yeeesssss! moment.

The problem is time zones. As far as I noticed most spammers are active when the moderators (all in USA) are sleeping. Always PM a moderator as well about your 'Mark as Spam' hit.

Kitten,
only advanced members have the spam button (not sure if the members have it too in newbies' posts).
Many times I have a look at the site statistics I can see few registered members and 100-200 visitors.
(Edit: right now 3 members and 122 guests.)

I wonder why Latin forum in Other Languages has been spammers' target for several days?

In addition to JJ's post, an advanced member can click the spam button only once effectively. The subsequent clicks won't affect the status of the spammer. On the other hand, every time any member (guest, newbie or advanced) visits a thread, the number of views increases. Thus, if I (and only I) view a thread with spammer's post 20 times and mark it as spam, the view-counter will show 20, however the spam-counter will read only one.

We have seen a lot of spams last weeks,
many of them look like coming from a single or two or three spammers.
Is there any possibility to ban the IP's of those scumbags?

I have a sore index finger from clicking the spam button today.

I don't really understand why admin doesn't do anything.

We definitely understand your frustration. Believe me, we are frustrated too. Today alone, we have blocked the accounts and deleted the posts of at least 40 spammers, and in the time it took me to get rid of the most recent batch, two more popped up and actually posted to this thread! We do have many measures in place to block spam, but we will not elaborate lest the spammers read this and figure out new ways to worm around them. Still, the spammers are persistent and invariably manage to find ways around these measures. Please know that we are not simply resting on our laurels. We are constantly modifying our spam-fighting measures to thwart new attacks and are working hard every day to keep these forums spam-free for you.

Thank you GoldmanM. I know you are doing your best for this oasis of all forums.
This really is frustrating sometimes. I bet I have pushed the spam button more than submit here.

Please, try that IP ban. If the spammer had posted from a library or netcafé PC someone will sure contact you, otherwise you have caulked a hole.

There is also the possibility to trace the IP and inform the service provider.

I clicked the spam button so many times I was being flagged for "spidering" the website, and had to type in a code to resume access...but, it feels so good to send those sleazeballs packing....

Yes. They do get paid. It is advertising. If someone hits the link or visits the website, their work is done.

nacy123 has somehow managed to get 13 spam posts and earn himself 39 points, all done in a period of less than an hour.
If these parasites could use their hacking skills in an honest job they would do quite well.
They must have a registered email address to get on the site.
It would be nice if admin could sent them a present, in the form of a 'virus'.

I have the feeling that tonersupermart is surreptitiously trying to worm his way into the forums in order to sell his products.

Daemon's term, not mine, Ex. I guess it has something to do with me working my way systematically down a list of spam posts and methodically marking them as spam over and over again. It happened again just a few minutes ago.

I don't let it bother me. In fact, if anything, it is catharsis for a lifetime of having to endure a deluge of ads that would insult the intelligence of a cabbage!

Admins please take note:

At this point I believe it is safe to assume that any message having the phrase "Full Video" in its body is spam.

It should not be difficult to construct a regular expression that detects any such message, triggering a script to automatically delete it and immediately ban any account from which such messages are posted more than twice.
