NOT A TEACHER

Dear Fellow Learners:

While watching an American television comedy program the other day, I heard this expression for the first time. I checked Google and discovered that although I had never heard it before, it is actually an expression used by some people. I thought that you would like to know it.

Mona is married to Raul.

They are VERY happy.

Mona works at a bank as a teller.

The teller next to her is Joe.

Mona and Joe talk to each other all 8 hours of work.

They help each other in every possible way.

They eat lunch together every working day.

All the other employees at the bank know that Mona and Joe are friends (and NOTHING more!).

They jokingly say that Joe is Mona's work husband (and that Mona is Joe's work wife).

NOTE:

Raul knows that Mona and Joe are ONLY friends. So he has NO problems with her having a work husband. In fact, Raul has a work wife, Betty.

I find the expression pretty humorous. I let out a guffaw. Is it only I that feel it this way?

I don't think so, Frosty.

I chuckled, too.

*****

I have some details for you.

Name of show: The King of Queens.

The wife had a work husband who was gay. But the wife's actual husband was still jealous.

So the actual husband decided to get a work wife in order to make his wife jealous. Since he worked only with other males, however, he was forced to choose a married male colleague as his work wife. He spent a lot of time outside of work with his work wife. He hoped that his wife would be jealous of the time that he spent with his work wife. She was not. (His work wife had NO idea that he was being referred to as a work wife!)

Have a great Thurs(day)! Tomorrow it should be at least 80 degrees in SoCal.

TheParser, what do you expect from TFD members?

Are they right or wrong?

Work husband or work wife are meaningless words.
Husband and wife has many other things in between.

The relationship of husband and wife is pious and nondetachable.

99% of the society believe in this lifelong bondage. It's not a joke.

I can't remember which comedienne said it but: " Bigamy is having one husband too many - monogamy is much the same."

"Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint."

I don't particularly like the expressions "work wife" and "work husband", though I can understand that some would find them innocuously humorous.

Of course, others are free to disagree with my tastes. As I've often said, "It takes all kinds to make a world — and here we are!"

Fight a gay with another gay.

Not so long ago many changes occurred in Western societies. And you could take note of some of those changes, too. At least as long as you will remember that Spain, Catholic stronghold in Europe passed a law making same-sex marriages legally recognized before Ireland. This makes your statement about marriage, work husband and work wife meaningless. Contrary to TheParser whose story in the additional explanatory context sounds for me funny and even educational up to the certain extent. With benefit possible to draw out by you, too.

"Gay" may be also understood as a merry man.

I've never heard of these phrases - If her husband and his wife understood and did not mind, I could see it working.
However, in the way it is described, it is just asking for bad feelings from their real spouses, and it completely unthinking.

Just for you Taurine,

What I feel is that in the "modern" time, many new terms are coined or promoted to sound different/ unique/ cool. The terms may not have universal acceptance or relevance, but are frequently used. The so-called urban dictionary contains many such terms. Moreover, the changed and machine-like lifestyle has been a reason to give birth to such terms which were 'impossible' earlier.

Many thanks, too, to: Mr. Joshi, Towan, NKM, Taurine, DragOnspeaker, and Srirr for their opinions.

They expressed their opinions in a civil manner (no personal insults).

That is the true function of a forum.

I wish you all a great weekend!
