Hello respected teachers,

They have defended themselves in the/a most valiant way.

Which is correct, a or the?

Why?

I am looking forward to your answers.

At first glance I must say that "a most valiant way" seems more likely. Presumably the meaning is that they have defended themselves "most valiantly."

To use the definite article ("the") would imply that they had several options as to how to defend themselves, and they chose the "most valiant" of the available methods.
