You look so scruffy lying there
Strawberry jam tarts in your hair
In all the world you haven't a care
And I have got so many

I don't seem to understand the bold part. :(

Just take it literally.

Jam tarts

made with strawberry jam

in your hair!

Then apply it to a song and take it any way you want!

Just in case you do not know what a jam tart is.

Because the jam is sticky then a jam tart makes quite a mess if dropped on the floor or crushed into a persons hair.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

I know what a jam tart is and have known for quite a long time. It's just that I couldn't imagine a child lying in bed with jam tarts in his hair.

If you say I have to understand it literally then be it so. Thank you very much! Both of you.

The song is about a mucky kid. such children often end up with jam and crumbs on their hands, face and clothes and in their hair when they eat jam tarts. I don't think we are meant to believe that he has whole tarts in his hair.

Some kids just can't stay clean . . .

Just in case you need the lyrics (I think Cilla Black changed them a bit) here are the original words.

Now I hear her sing "working at the Lune" and I'm knocked out. Not able to find what that could mean.
