Ollie began coughing, then leaned over and vomited weakly. Ames held him while he did it. The others were running toward them now, shouting jubilantly, Sergeant Groh in the forefront.

Question: In this case, Sergeant Groh in the forefront == Sergeant Groh at the front? If not, why?

Yes.

There was a group of people running (and shouting).
At the front of that group was Sergeant Groh.
