Hello respected teachers,

Any difference between these sentences

I can do all my homework in an hour.

I can do all my homework within an hour.

Could you tell me the difference between in and within so that I would be able to use them correctly in different contexts?

Sentence 1: The phrase "in an hour" means "at the end of mentioned period of time i.e. 1 hour". Let us say it is 9pm now. The completion of homework is expected to take one more hour i.e. at the end of 1 hour, the task would have been completed.

Sentence 2: The phrase "within an hour" means "before a certain period of time has passed i.e. before 1 hour has elapsed". Let us say it is 9pm now. The completion of homework is expected to take a maximum of one more hour i.e. before the end of 1 more hour, the task would have been completed.

I agree with sureshot's interpretations. However, while only 'in' is appropriate for the first meaning, 'in' could be used with the same meaning as 'within' in the second sentence in BrE.
