WHO Labels Cell Phones "Possibly Carcinogenic"

After reviewing epidemiological studies relating to mobile phone use and to exposure to elec tromagnetic fields in the workplace, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that current evidence does not establish a strong link between cell phone use and increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer. However, it also does not rule it out. It has therefore classified the devices as "possibly carcinogenic" and recommends that, until additional research into the long-term effects of heavy mobile phone use provides more definitive data, consumers consider reducing their exposure. In fact, all the gadgets that we use have bad effects on us. It is good to be in natural state with all the closeness with nature.

So are cell phones supposed to be bad only:
1. When you use them to talk/text
2. They're in your pocket
3. They're in the house.

In short, how bad are they?

In short:
There is no evidence proving harm from cell / wireless phone use. (Radio waves are also emitted from cordless / wireless phone handsets.)

Evidence suggesting harm is weak, using retrospective studies dependent upon recall, showing very weak effect.

Such evidence is contradicted by other studies, also retrospective and relying on recall, which show no effect.

The concern expressed is related to brain tumors and "use" applies having the phone at your ear.

More information:
National Cancer Institute: Cell phone cancer risk fact sheet nicely summarizes what is known (and, mostly, not known) about risks.

There are prospective studies underway.
They have just started and as far as I know are still in the process of enrolling subjects. It is estimated it will take 20 to 30 years before it is known whether there are any significant results.

Take-away for now:
Most cancer specialists who comment on this are unimpressed by the evidence.

That said, the specialists I have heard also state it would be reasonable to invest in headphones for the telephone, so it is unnecessary to hold the phone (which contains the antenna, from which the radio waves emanate) up to one's skull. Using a speaker function and holding the phone down in front of you would also help.

Most specialists I have heard also mention (slightly) elevated concern about children.

Because children's brains are still developing, they are more susceptible to damage. Children today will also be exposed to many more hours of cell phone usage than someone my age (who was well into adulthood before such phones appeared on the horizon).

It would be not unreasonable for parents to restrict cell / wireless phone use in young children and provide older children and teens with phones using ear plugs / headsets.

Cancer - caused by a "cell" phone? Hel-lo, people!? Of course these phones are dangerous! We don't need more studies. We need to rename these devices - immediately.
