Usage: The Thompsons thought it inappropriate that their newly widowed neighbor wore such a sporty outfit to her husband's funeral.

Seems odd you would not mention Sporty as something appropriate or associated with sport.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

As a retired UK Teacher of English, I would not use 'sporty' in this way. I would suggest that it is not a clear use of the word in UK English and agree with previous contributors; 'sporty' means actively interested and engaged in sport.
It was used in comedy radio, TV and film of the 1950s and 1960s to mean 'flirtatious' but this is now an extremely dated usage and not likely to be understood.
