Ah literature. When you're surrounded by enthusiasts of all things literary, who air their knowledge and quote famous poets and authors with regular zeal, it sometimes rubs off, or sometimes sows a seed that lies dormant for years until a character in a movie or TV show speaks a line that prompts a memory.

"He's somewhat of a Byronic hero".

Ah, Byronic... not bionic... Byronic hero...I've heard the term...but do I know the type?

Wikipedia wrote:
The Byronic hero presents an idealised, but flawed character whose attributes include: great talent; great passion; a distaste for society and social institutions; a lack of respect for rank and privilege (although possessing both); being thwarted in love by social constraint or death; rebellion; exile; an unsavory secret past; arrogance; overconfidence or lack of foresight; and, ultimately, a self-destructive manner. These types of characters have since become ubiquitous in literature and politics.

And that's just one source...but they are definitely out there, these Byronic heroes.

I think there may even be some on TFD at times.

I wonder what Byron would have thought of social media...a futile waste of time perhaps...until his name and contribution to things literary get mentioned.

Attention seeker!

Job 33:15 "In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;" Theology 101 "If He doesn't know everything then He isn't God."

Pretty much Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne types, I guess.

Ah, men! Don't you know that the most important attribute of a a Byronic Hero is brooding dark looks?

It's absolutely no use at all being "mad, bad and dangerous to know" if one doesn't have dark eyes and a lock of black hair falling across one's brow.

No matter how much passion, distaste for Society, and talent one possesses; being blond haired and blue-eyed completely prohibits one from being Byronic!

Yep - he qualifies! (Though I believe that the parts he played were very different to the person he actually was?)

I posted this several years ago in a different thread on this forum:

Isn't it more than a little ironic,
That most of those who run him down,
Dismiss him as philanderer or clown,
Secretly themselves want to be Byronic.
