The above quote is from, Following the Equator--Part One--Chapter VII.

Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economize it.

—Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar.

Truth is stranger than fiction--to some people, but I am measurably familiar with it.
- Following the Equator, Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar

Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't.
- Following the Equator, Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar

When in doubt, tell the truth.
- Following the Equator, Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar

My own luck has been curious all my literary life; I never could tell a lie that anyone would doubt, nor a truth that anybody would believe.
- Following the Equator

Often the surest way to convey misinformation is to tell the strict truth.

In a world that has embraced Machiavelli where truth with a small "t" is only a malleable means to an end, Twain's wholehearted advocacy for the Truth jolts us like a splash of cold, clear water. Now that Twain has our attention are we willing to follow his advice?

Of course many chose to follow Machiavelli's line

"Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed. "
-Joseph Stalin

"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed."
— Adolf Hitler -similar attributed to Lenin
"....the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
-Joseph Goebbels

..oh and just remembered the 'Spycatcher trial' during which a British Cabinet secretary came up with the phrase ' economical with the truth'. The trial concerned an attempt by the British government to ban a book written by a retired M15 officer which revealed too much. If you look at Mark Twain's quote in that light it might be saying that truth is so precious it should be rationed.

"All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them."-Galileo

Pudd'nhead Wilson is not to be confused with Pudd'nhead Jones who played for 1950 Phillies who won the National League Pennant.

Like Bartholomew and Hildegard one wonders why nobody names their kid Puddin'head? Or Jello for that matter.

Thank you for the information about Pudd'nhead Jones.Anxious

Here is some information about, Pudd'nhead Wilson. I found the following historically correct and sad at the same time.

Puddn'head Wilson moves into the background as the focus shifts to the slave Roxy, her son, and the family they serve. Roxy is only one-sixteenth black, and her son Valet de Chambre (referred to as "Chambers") is only 1/32 black................... The narrative moves forward two decades, and Tom Driscoll (formerly Valet de Chambre), believing himself to be wholly white and raised as a spoiled aristocrat, has grown to be a selfish and dissolute young man.

Mark Twain wrote truths of beauty and truths that showed the mindset of the times in an unflattering but truthful light.

"The whole essence of truth cannot be transmitted from mouth to ear. Nor can any pen describe it, not even that of the recording Angel, unless man finds the answer in the sanctuary of his own heart, in the innermost depths of his divine intuitions."

We humans define the truth from things that we are aware from our senses. But, things we are not aware of, has never existed for us,, and so,, we confine the boundaries of the truth.

So, the definition of truth is in strict respect to what one is aware of.

Who knows the actual truth?? So, who really want to economize the truth??

The one you are looking for is the one who is looking!!

To thumb one's nose at truth, whether known or unknown, can be harmful. All doubters please ask the opinion of the drug addict who believed he could fly from the top of a tall building. Of course, he won't say much; but the answer will be crystal.
