condescending

(adjective) Displaying a patronizingly superior attitude.

Synonyms: patronizing, arch

Usage: Sir William, no doubt, meant to be kind, but he was cold and condescending, and not a little pompous and conceited.

It didn't always mean 'rude, arrogant'. It wasn't always an insult or criticism. In older literature you will see it mean 'do a favour, be kind to someone your "inferior"'.

Normally the words here are in their archaic form. For once it is in its modern meaning, but potentially misleading as to its past usage! Whistle

For someone displaying a condescending and pretentious attitude, I look at his perspicuity and cognition.

The Lord Fuarcquar aproves most enthusiastically, as he is most assured that those of lesser social standing will be absolutely thrilled beyond description.

I have noticed that some people who come to the United States in order to live here find it condescending when an American -- who is actually trying to be friendly -- uses one or two words in that immigrant's first language.

Many immigrants want to be addressed solely in English.

That is to say, they want to be treated like any other American.

Young people are especially sensitive.

I remember a young Russian being offended when a well-meaning American answered him with "Da" instead of "Yes."
