Pillbox is also used in military vernacular as a machine gun emplacement or gun emplacement.

A pillbox hat is a small woman's hat with a flat crown, straight, upright sides, and no brim. It is named after the small cylindrical or hexagonal cases that pills used to be sold in.

Yes, the pillbox is the shape. In context you might omit the word 'hat' if it were obvious. But the word on its own does not mean a hat!

Exactly right. The first thing you think of is Jackie with her newly-fashionable hats.

I think of one of those first when I hear or read the word pillbox, part due to the fact there's one in the local park and golf course that was built to help defend against German invasion during WW2 very similar to that one.

The hat style is a distant third, after a container for pills like one my Grandmother used to own.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.
