Donner Party Sets Out on Ill-Fated Journey from Illinois to California (1846)

The Donner Party was a group of families from Illinois and Iowa that set out for California following a little-used, supposedly shorter, route across Utah. The shortcut only tired and delayed the party, and while recovering at what is now Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada, the group was trapped by early snow. Many died, several while trying to get help; some reportedly resorted to cannibalism. Rescuers reached the survivors in February 1847. How many of the 87 pioneers survived the ordeal? More...

Since I read an article aabout this a couple of years ago, I can never hear the phrase 'dinner party' in the same way again!

Apparently, once they had started eating the bodies, a few got a taste for it, and ate human even when other food was available. Especially brains......

And a few judicious accidents to keep the supply coming.

American Experience---The Donner Party

The above programme was the first one that came out on PBS. By the end of the programme I didn't know if they ate their own or not.

Nova---Traces of the Donner Party

After the new programme above, I think there may have been some who canabalized but not to the extent we were taught.

The extra information on the left adds to the story and is worth a look, if you have the time.

Thank you to PBS and all who support her for the above information.

This activity gives a good pruning to the grocery budget and the family tree.

**Snort** Very funny, but before one does too much pruning, consider:

Wikipedia: Kuru A good general look
Kuru: The Dynamics of a Prion Disease A paper, which looks to have been written in the late 1990s. Focuses on the Prion aspect.
Emedicine: Kuru The best information, but you may need to register (free) to view it.
