Bechtel, best known for Iraq War profiteering, bribery and kickbacks has tried to push a solar project in the Mojave desert. The problem seems to be that the power would not be used for locals, so they would not benefit, plus, there are no local utilities who want the power and the project itself would endanger a fragile ecosystem as well as taking much needed water away from locals.

Regenerate Power recently purchased Soda Mountain Solar from a division of San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp. Regenerate Power, based in Menlo Park, partnered with Bechtel as a long-term investor in Soda Mountain Solar.
