Your favorite flag, the meaning of flags, anything related to flags, banners, displays, or heraldry.

My favorite flag > Portugal

At service since 1910.
Green: hope
Red: blood spilled by the soldiers of Portugal
the globe is the world that portugese sailors discovered in the Discoveries

Thar has made a strong case, black alonso is much more convincing for his Norway case.

The British colonial history makes the Union Jack less appealing to me. Portugal should wait till British has done their boasting.

OK, a crest instead.

This is the story........ (time ripple music here....)

There was an island, a place where rebels lived free from kings.

But King Harald wanted to attack the island. He sent a warlock to scout for him, who took the form of a whale. But whenever he tried to land, he was attacked by mythical monsters.

In Vopnafjörður in the east, he was driven off by a dragon (Dreki), which breathed poison on him.
In Eyjafjörður in the north he was driven off by an eagle (Gammur).
In Breiðafjörður in the west he was driven off by a bull (Griðungur).
At Vikarsskeið in the south he was driven off by a giant with an iron staff(Bergrisi).

He gave up and reported back to king Harald that he could not invade because the island was protected.

The story goes there was a law that ships approaching the island had to cover their warlike figureheads, so as not to provoke the four Landvætir - the protectors.

(the coat of arms is a modern invention, although the story is old from the sagas of Snorri. The coat of arms used to be a fish. But that is a story for another day...Whistle )

The Portuguese flag always makes me think of a snowshoe. I know it isn't, but once you have an image in your head...

Apartment flag in Big Bang Theory. I know, not really a world flag but it amused me.

The international flag of planet Earth

PURPOSE OF THE FLAG

1. To be used while representing planet Earth.

2. To remind the people of Earth that we share this planet, no matter of national boundaries. That we should take care of each other and the planet we live on.

Finnish coat of arms dates back to the 16th century, but the use of heraldic lion in Nordic countries started in the 12th century.

edit:

Poster thar likes the flag of NEPAL since '... everyone else is just so square...'

The only flags of the members of the UN which are square, are those of Switzerland and the Vatican.

The majority are rectangular, man!

OK, guess where.

A battle of the geometric shapes - which is cooler....
I think they chose right. The first one is boring.

Nordic cross Dannebrog, but in green. (Green - Geddit?) Brick wall

but it was beaten by this one. The ice, the sea, the sun low on the horizon, and the icebergs above the sea.
Or lots of dead seals on the ice. Whistle

Or, just the colours of the Dannebrog, but a new shape, for a new nation. And people who are not Nordic. Or cross. And like circles on flags. Whistle

thar's 'family tree' is missing a branch.

It shows Yorkshire as the George cross with sun and white rose, but not the old flag of Lancashire - St Michael's cross and red rose.

The blue and white show the livery colours of the house of Lancaster, the red rose being the badge of the duchy since at least the early fifteenth century.

Of course, with the eventual marital settlement of the wars, the red and white roses were combined.
