Pierre Larousse (1817)

Larousse was a French publisher, lexicographer, and encyclopedist. In 1852, he founded a publishing house called Librairie Larousse, producing textbooks, grammar books, and dictionaries, but his major work, reflecting his desire "to teach everyone about everything," was the combined dictionary and encyclopedia Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle, or Great Universal 19th-Century Dictionary, which took more than 10 years to complete. I find it quite interesting to read that Larousse was frustrated as a school teacher because he found the education system quite rigid, and this is more than one hundred years ago. Also interesting is how he and a colleague tried to change the teaching methods to be more progressive, to encourage students to think creatively. Well, sad to say but education remains quite rigid here with the rote method of learning solidly in place.
