Virgil was a Roman poet and the author of the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the Aeneid, widely regarded as one of the greatest long poems in world literature. The Divine Comedy follows the character of Dante, on his soul searching pilgrimage from Hell, to Purgatory and later onto Heaven. He is accompanied by Virgil who embodies human reasoning. There are brief moments when Virgil acts as Dante’s personal bodyguard, warning off mythological creatures, monsters and the damned sinners of the Underworld. Alighieri amalgamates the allegorical poem with concepts from feudal Christian theories and philosophical ideas, such as the nine circles of suffering in which the earth evolves. Dante has provided the world of Literature with influence that has spanned centuries, an example is the legendary quote inscribed on the gates of hell “Lasciate ogni speranza , voi ch’entrate” (“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here”

It is clear that Dante considers Virgil a mentor not only to his character in the poem , but also as a fellow poet to whom he could learn from. ‘what role does Virgil play in Dante’s Divine Comedy?’. One could consider the idea that Dante chose Virgil to be his source of inspiration , to be his guide and mentor , and so on , because he felt that his literary work could be compared to the standard of Virgil.....
