Antoine Lavoisier Tried, Convicted, and Guillotined (1794)

Lavoisier was a French nobleman known today as the "father of modern chemistry." He stated the first version of the Law of Conservation of Mass, co-discovered and named oxygen, wrote the first detailed list of elements, and introduced the metric system. Lavoisier also worked to improve economic and social conditions in France, holding various government posts. As a Philly guy I think Joseph Priestly deserves the discovery of oxygen mantle. Though Priestly's second most notable discovery might give oxygen a run for its money - soda water.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm starting to think the guillotine wouldn't be such a bad way to go.
