She refers, of course, to the possibility we will be doomed by evil that is within ourselves. But sweeping generalities are difficult. There is also the possibility of a completely virtuous person being doomed in a different but equally valid sense by evil within someone else.

The only evil that could EVER doom us eternally, and with no chance of true happiness, is the evil we think is true happiness. If something- or someone- hypnotizes us to believe that all is fine when all is really some kind of blistering hell, than we don't see the blistering hell. Henceforth, we don't see a need to escape. No matter who really loves you, who really helps you, only you can make the final choice to either be carried away from your personal evil or live within it's burning cage, the cage you think is home sweet home.To summarize, if you don't want to escape, you won't.
