Maiden Flight of the First US Airship (1923)The USS Shenandoah was the first American-built rigid dirigible. Its design was based on a German zeppelin downed during WWI, and it was the first ship to be filled with helium—making it safer than hydrogen-filled crafts. A year after its maiden voyage, it became the first rigid airship to cross North America. While on another tour in 1925, it passed through a storm and was torn apart. Thirteen crew members died in the crash. How did those who survived the disaster manage to do so? More...

I've said this before in a post or two, but I can't help from remembering the time I got to ride in the Goodyear blimp when I was a young teen. Fantastic experience! It's a good thing we didn't go through any storms.

Im sure it was a fantastic view, and yes it would be horrible to be caught in a storm in a blimp but now-a-days I believe they use the less flammible helium as opposed to hydrogen. How did you manage to snag that ride?

How did you manage to snag that ride? Yes, helium has been used for a long time. I managed to snag that ride when I was in Arkansas visiting my cousin, and she and I got excited when we saw the Goodyear blimp overhead. We got out of the swimming pool and ran up to the balcony to get a closer look--like that was really going to help. We hadn't seen the blimp very many times so we kept talking about it for the rest of the day. I remember saying how much I'd love to have a chance to ride in it. My uncle, the newspaper man who knew everybody who was anybody in town, heard me say that and offered to see if he could find a connection so that my dream might come true. I was excited by the idea but thought that balcony was probably going to be the closest I ever got to that blimp. Lo and behold, he came home the next day with the arrangements all made for me to take a blimp ride! My cousin wasn't interested in actually riding on it, so I boarded the little "car" under the blimp with six strangers. The flight was quiet (unlike hot air ballooning), and the view seemed to go on forever. Truly unforgettable!

sounds good, nice slow cruise, I watched a Modern Marvels about the old airships on History channel recently and alot of them had some seriously nice ammenities. Ive been bugging my dad whos in fire administration here to pull some strings for a ride along with the Blue Angels, 3 years and still no luck At least Ive come to copes with the fact of its not happeneing..although Im still curious to how the local weather man got to go for a "media ride"

The Blue Angels? Seriously? I'd be puking up my guts. I guess the experience of flying with the Blue Angels would probably be almost the polar opposite of flying in a blimp. Blimps are very nice to people who get motion sick easily.
