Birth Rate Dips in Poor EconomyThe US birth rate dropped 2.6 percent last year to its lowest level in at least a century, and experts are attributing this to the economic downturn. This is the second consecutive year that the birth rate has declined and a stark contrast to 2007, when more babies were born in the US than any other year in the nation's history and when the current recession began. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the birth rate also dropped as people, unsure about their economic futures, postponed having children. When the economy improved, the birth rate increased, and experts expect that the same will be true today. More...

I've no idea how we do it, but a new economic model is in order.
The growth we've had isn't sustainable. Land that used to grow food, filter and clean our water, allow for biodiversity has been gobbled up at an amazing rate, at least here in the USA. There are such shortages of metal products that there have been crime waves of people stripping copper pipe from construction sites. We all saw what reckless drilling for shrinking oil reserves has been resulting in (the spill in China, the BP disaster in the gulf, and another rig just blew up in the gulf). The world's fisheries are collapsing, and still the population grows.
I don't know what the new rationale for a healthy economy will be, but the one we pine for is a dinosaur.

I see no evidence of the same in the UK. In fact there seems to be a boom and furthermore, with the aid of fertility drugs, a disproportionate number of twins being produced.

The drop in birth rate proportionate to the economy is not surprising, but I worry about the possible effect that economic conditions have had on the adoption rate. If fewer people are choosing to have children themselves, I imagine there are likely fewer willing to adopt as well, which is very troubling.

Perhaps if the Discovery channel hostage-taker had read these statistics he might not have resorted to such extremes.

I hope that his extremes wont taint the concepts he believed in. Why he put all of the responsibility on the Discovery channel is beyond me. Concerning this thread, I'm afraid that our economy must grow or die. Lack of new customers to buy new widgets will further the collapse. It is a means to the end. As far as I’m concerned the declining birth rate is the silver lining in the recession cloud. I would love to see resurgence in the “Zero Population Growth” movement from the 1960s.
