First-Person ShooterFirst-person shooters are action video games in which players use handheld weapons to shoot targets in game worlds rendered from the visual perspective of the player characters. These types of games were the first to make extensive use of multiplayer gaming. Among the most popular video games on the market today, first-person shooters are also the subject of controversy due to their graphic depictions of violence and killing. What game has been linked to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre? More...

FPS's also were the driving force behind a lot of clever graphics programming to speed things up.

I have never played them and never wanted to but have seen them featured in documentaries etc. The graphics inventive, clever and very advanced ... very lifelike.

I think "Doom" really got a bad rap when it was blamed for the Colombine killings. I know lots of nice, normal, young people who play these kind of games but never engage in any violent behavior.

The problem with that is that the article only talks about FPS in terms of gaming, as does Wikipedia. Google "first-person shooter" or "first-person shooting" and all first page results refer to computer or video games.
I've never heard any one of my computer guru friends refer to double-clicking the computer mouse while not playing a game of any sort as FPS, either.

Back in the day, we played MDK. Advanced for its time, and containing a sense of humor, it was the first game my son learned—we used to share the controls, he would shoot and I would steer. Maybe I'll fire it up again…

Why play them when I have the real thing... I have to go out shooting at least twice a year to qualify on my Sig Sauer...

By the way, one doesn't have to be a computer 'guru' to understand the slight but somewhat obvious similarity between FPS and just working with your mouse. FPS games are mostly about 'seeking and clicking (if using a mouse) at what you need to kill/destroy'. While computing, 'you just click to open what you need to use'. There are differences of course, that goes without saying. Gotcha, bud, again

I don't play these games much anymore, but I used to love to play GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64. I've heard they're making an updated version for the Wii. I may have go out and buy that one for nostalgia's sake
